On Saturday night (July 15), Eminem and Ed Sheeran continued their musical partnership in the former’s hometown of Detroit.

It was the rapper’s first public performance since being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last November in Los Angeles, and he joined the newest leg of Sheeran’s Mathematics Tour for a two-song surprise appearance deep into the event.

Ed Sheeran addressed the crowd and told mentioning Eminem as “one of my favourite” artists and discussed eating at the rapper’s Mom’s Spaghetti takeaway nearby. “I’m wondering if I can play a cover of one of his songs for you?”

Sheeran and his five-piece band then began playing Eminem’s award-winning hit “Lose Yourself,” singing the opening lyrics until Eminem, dressed in a dark hoodie and baseball cap, joined him, much to the delight of a crowd Sheeran had already proclaimed the loudest of the tour so far. The two performed the song’s first verse and chorus, with Eminem telling the already-standing crowd to “stand up!”

Sheeran then informed his fans that Eminem “was gonna come on and do one song, and I said, ‘You can’t come on in Detroit and do just one song. Do you want to hear another?’”

They then reproduced their Rock Hall performance of Eminem’s 2000 smash “Stan,” with Sheeran singing Dido’s portions. The two exchanged hugs, with Eminem stating, “Thank you, Ed. Detroit, I appreciate you. I love you. Peace!” before bowing to the audience with his middle finger as he exited the stage.

“I don’t know about you, but that was pretty awesome,” Sheeran stated before starting “Perfect.” “This has been such a memorable night,” he exclaimed later. I’ll never forget it,” Sheeran said, and for the encores, he wore a Detroit Lions jersey with the number five and the name Mathers on the back, a nod to Eminem.

Prior to his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Eminem performed at the MTV Video Music Awards in August and ApeFest 2022 in June with Snoop Dogg. These followed their participation in the Emmy Award-winning halftime show at Super Bowl LVI in Inglewood, California. Eminem hasn’t done a full-length concert since October 2019 in Abu Dhabi, which was one of seven overseas shows he did that year.
