Donna Adrian Gaines, better known by her stage name Donna Summer, was an American singer and composer who lived from December 31, 1948, until May 17, 2012. She rose to fame during the disco period of the 1970s and earned the title “Queen of Disco” while her music grew in popularity all over the world.

Lung cancer claimed Summer’s life in 2012 at the age of 63. Fans and several acquaintances were in shock. She kept her condition a secret, only notifying her husband and kids. “Love to Love You, Donna Summer,” a new documentary about her, will debut on HBO and HBO Max on Saturday.

Summer believed that the 9/11 attacks were to blame for her lung cancer because she didn’t smoke. She was living in an apartment in the heart of Manhattan when the towers were hit.
